PLAN YOUR PROJECT

Pick the stone
by its job.

  • Surface and base are separate layers. Order each one for its role.
  • Size changes everything. Smaller stone is easier underfoot; larger stone drains and stays put.
  • Set edging and fabric first, before the stone goes down.
  • Gravel is heavy. Check the weight of your order before planning a pickup load.

Common questions.

What gravel is best for a walkway?

#8 pea gravel is the usual choice for a decorative path. It is small and comfortable to walk on. Use edging to hold it in place, and put a compacted base under any path that gets daily traffic.

What is the difference between #57 and #8 gravel?

Size. #57 runs about ½ to 1 inch; #8 pea gravel runs about ¼ to ½ inch. Smaller stone is easier underfoot. Larger stone drains better and is less likely to scatter.

What is #304 used for?

#304 is a base material. Ours is crushed recycled concrete with sizes down to fines, so it packs tight under patios, walkways and driveways. It is not meant to be the visible surface.

How much does a yard of gravel weigh?

Weight varies with the stone and moisture. Ask the yard for the estimated load weight, then compare it with your vehicle or trailer’s rated payload. Delivery is available.

How much gravel do I need?

Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. Use the calculator for several areas. Compaction is not included, so confirm base depths with your plan.
