PLAN YOUR PROJECT

Start with
the grade.

  • If your plan names a grade, order that grade. Bring it with you.
  • Bigger number, smaller stone. #57 is the largest here; #9 is the finest.
  • Fines pack tight. Keep #9 out of layers that need to drain.
  • Know your finished depth and compaction requirement before ordering.

THREE GRADES

Three grades.
Largest to finest.

#57 limestone

The largest grade here, with open space between stones so water moves through.

Use it for
Drainage, driveway and base layers.

#8 limestone

A smaller crushed stone that sets up tighter than #57.

Use it for
Walkways, driveway topping and construction work.

#9 limestone

Finely screened crushed limestone that packs into a smooth, tight layer.

Use it for
Leveling and finishing layers, where the plan calls for it.

Common questions.

What do the limestone numbers mean?

Grade numbers identify different size ranges; they are not a simple larger-number-means-smaller-stone scale. Bring your project specifications so the yard can match the required grade.

Which limestone is best for drainage?

#57. Its larger, open-graded stone lets water move through. Do not swap in fine #9 for a drainage layer; the fines pack tight and slow water down.

What limestone goes on a driveway?

#57 is common in base layers, with #8 used as a topping. Driveway builds vary with soil and traffic, so follow your contractor’s plan.

Is #9 limestone the same as mason sand?

No. They can look alike in a photo, but #9 is crushed limestone and mason sand is a fine sand for mortar. Order the one your project calls for.

How much limestone do I need?

Square feet × depth in inches ÷ 324 = cubic yards. The calculator adds up several areas. It does not include compaction.
